"Consider the children's comics as
and banality is very loose.
Many comics are quite educated,
unlike many films. "
-Alan Moore
differences between comics and film. Dr. Manhattan, Rorschach, NiteOwl
most acclaimed graphic novel has finally reached the big screen in a way that not everyone liked. Created in 1986 by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, Watchmen shows an alternate reality of the eighties where Richard Nixon is still president, the United States are on the brink of nuclear war with the Soviet Union, costumed superheroes have been declared illegal unless they are in direct collaboration with the government. Watchmen was one of the first superhero stories that needed to be seen from the perspective of an adult to appreciate all the ideological layers showing.
Both the graphic novel and the film presents several characteristic features of the era, such as the emblematic songs 99 Luftballoons and Everybody Wants to Rule the World and classic television with its beautiful wood finishes.
Silk Spectre, Ozymandias and The Comedian.
Legendary comics writer Alan Moore is widely known for his stand of being against the film adaptations of his works as they are not designed to be properly counted in two hours due to the complexity of its narrative structure. "My stories are meant to be enjoyed in a comfortable chair by the fire in a fireplace, not in a movie theater in the middle of a bunch of strangers" Moore himself has argued, ventilating and his personality a little hermit. film adaptations of V for Vendetta and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen , other works of authorship, clearly give the reason Moore and drastically altering the meaning of their stories. For this reason, many feared that Watchmen suffer much more due to the long and intricate story that runs. The major changes made to this work are:
-Tales of the Black Freighter
Within the history of Watchmen , a child reads the comic pirates, in a story that adds context and allegory to the main story. Although the film aired for obvious reasons of time, Tales of the Black Freighter animation appear as a DVD and then be integrated into the extended version of Watchmen on DVD and BluRay. Have to wait and see how it looks in the mixture.
-Final different
The end of the cartoon of an octopus alien destroys major cities of the world was changed to one where Dr. Manhattan is to blame for the destruction with a blue ray. This made us feel the same way we felt when we saw that Galactus was a just a big cloud in Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer. A giant octopus and eats planets just do not fit with the simplified stories that present both films.
"Dr. Manhattan's penis
Many insist that alter the penis of Doc Manhattan style" David de Miguel Angel "to a much larger and apparently circumcised in the film goes against what the creators intended: to show the helplessness of an all-powerful being (although it sounds contradictory) within a society devastated. But come on, someone who can transform matter in any way you want and displaying the body of a bodybuilder on steroids ("tautology?) Probably would shape their genitals to be awesome, do not you think?
-Other changes
Some scenes from the book are referenced only briefly in the film, such as Silk Spectre throws a snow globe, or when the ship NiteOwl Archie jail attack Screechers with sonic. Other subplots are omitted as the relationship between Rorschach and his psychiatrist and some issues between The Comedian and Silk Spectre daughter.
Verdict Given the omissions and changes made to the graphic novel I can say that the 162 minute-long film Watchmen is an excellent and entertaining advertising to the original source. The book sales have increased dramatically thanks to this film and I think that is good for Alan Moore, make more people read his works.
